The Destructors by Graham Greene (Dafff)

In this book Graham Greene tells us the story about a group of boys that call themselves as “the Wormsley Common Gang”. They are just some bad street boys that actually enjoy seeing other people suffer or other crazy things like that. They accept a new integrant because they saw a dangerous quality in Trevor, who has only fifteen years old. They refer to him as “T”.

During the war, “the Wormsley Common Gang” liked to meet each others at a site where they can hear the bomb fall sound. Unexpectedly T tells to Blackie, who the leader of the band is, that it would be very funny to make explode the neighbors house. Then Trevor says that he just visited Old Misery’s house, the neighbor, so he now know how the interior of his house looked like and they can enter and maybe steel things. But in between telling the plan he had, suddenly he thinks that it would be so much better if they destroy the house from the inside out, and so nobody can see them. The plan was going quite good. Destruct the house would give glory to the Wormsley Common Gang. They were done with the house. They totally destruct it.

When Old Misery notices that is house is gone, but then he get angry and he asks the driver what happened to it. The driver starts to laugh all over and then he apologizes but Old Misery has to admit it´s funny.

I think that if you really analyze this story you can find so many morals. Like, for example… we can notice how different humor can be depending on the neighborhoods; where you grow up has so much to do with the person you become, but in my opinion is kind of horrifying how people in general don´t realize that he’s actions can actually affect others live. The influence is one thing we humans don’t have very clear and this book is just one more example of it. Like for the gang band, they take destructing Old Misery´s house like a price to win. They think that that fact is going to make the band more famously and is going to be brilliant to his reputation, but for Old Misery they are taking away all he had. They are taking away somebody´s home just because they think it´s hilarious. This is on definitive not one of my favorite books, because I don´t really see any point of this type of humor. For myself I say it is pointless.

Personally, I think that is stupid laughing or making fun with other alien persons suffer. For my part I like more elaborated jokes, but I neither recommend not reading it, because you can learn at least one thing of every book. And actually, it is good once in a while to read unusual stories and of course you don´t find many stories like this. So, my recommendation would be that it won´t affect if you read it, but when you read it try to be in a mood very simple and try to find a point of it.

The Destructors (Lorena)

Written by Graham Greene in 1954, 'The Destructors', is a short story that occurs in the streets of London after WW2.

A gang of kids called the "Wormsley Common Gang", after being convinced by a member of the same, plan to destroy an old man's house - which is the only one left from all the remains of the war in a parking lot- leaving absolutely no trace of it.

Trevor (T.) is the gang member who gets the idea of destroying the old man's house. He is not a normal person and you can perceive this by the way he acts and thinks, but this is an obvious way to behave, after surviving a war.
The old man, Mr. Thomas (or as the gang call him, "Old Misery") is a just a good man, who treats everyone politely and doesn't harm anybody, but despite his kind acts, he is about to experience something h doesn't deserve.

Its supposed to be a fun story, involving 'black humour', but personally I don't find it funny because what they want to do, is something inhuman and terrible, besides I wouldn't like that it occurred to me. It's an interesting story though, where you can experience different feelings such as suspense. You can also perceive the ways of how people behaved/thought after harsh situations, like surviving a war in this case.

Funny Quote (Lorena)

I think this video is really funny because you can see how people can be convinced to do something just by following what others do, even if they don't know what is really happening. You can see how a group of organized people manage to scare innocent ignorant people in the street, by making them believe something bad is going to happen.

Journey's End Letter Home, by Lorena

12th June 1918

My beloved Emile,
I write to inform you that this could be the last letter you receive from me.
In a few hours I’m about to go there into No Man’s Land to fight against those bloody dam Germans good for nothing. I was picked to do it, to start the raid, along with the newest integrant of the team. He’s name is Raleigh. He is a good innocent and intelligent guy, I really like him but I’m not sure if he should go with me; orders are orders and I can’t disobey, but the problem is his inexperience, he’s not prepared enough for doing this, but there needs to be a reason for why he was picked.

I don’t really know how to feel: I feel really scared I don’t want to die. Not this way. Not shoot by the enemy. I really prefer to die from some kind of illness, even if its painful and unbearable, I still prefer it; but I’m quite sure everything is going to go out well. I’m hopeful that I will survive this raid. Since the day I have been informed that I am in charge of starting it, that was about two days ago, along with the new kid, Raleigh, I’ve been praying. In case anything goes wrong in a few hours, I want you to resist; I know its difficult being so many years together sharing our love, sharing a family, but someday, somehow it would have come. I don’t want to admit it, but everybody’s life ends at some point. How I wish it was different. Look after yourself, Benjamin, Lilly and Caroline, our lovely and beautiful kids.

I want to go back home with you and the kids. Even though I wish this, I can’t disappoint my battalion, especially Stanhope. I’m in doubt with him. He is such a good friend; I really appreciate the moments we’ve spent together in this hell. At least I’m not alone, not by having him by my side. We support each other. War is pointless but I don’t want to give up now, especially not when my entire troop that has given everything. We all have given everything and made our best, we’ve put so much effort in this warfare, but it’s not worth it; not war being the reason.

I wish I could have you in my arms again. See Lilly and Caroline practice ballet and see Benjamin play Fur Elise in the piano. Has he learned any other yet? How I wish to see him, and the girls. I want to read them all Alice in Wonderland. I want to see them grow up healthy and happy; my desire is that we were all together, sitting in the dining room, eating the delicious meal you prepare for us every Sunday evening and see my family. Let me tell you I have been thinking of you all the time, about the love we have, give and get. You are the best thing that could ever happen to me, really, you are my life, I don’t know what I would be if we haven’t met in that cafeteria Emile, just imagine. Our lives would be so different. Who’s life wouldn’t be different if he or she had taken another decision? Go that way or the other? Teach history or remain unemployed? Break up with him/her or marry? Kill Archduke Franz Ferdinand or not? Just imagine how different it would be if that person who decided to kill him thought the opposite, think it twice, regret at the correct minute and avoid the consequences. War. How different, just imagine... but what happened, happened and we can’t go back in time; how I wish we could, but that is the rule.

Emile, do you remember that gold ring we got the day of our wedding? That is a nonsense question, how could you not remember it? I am going to remove it, for the first time, and leave it in the table. I’m putting Stanhope in charge of it in case I die, so you can receive it safely; as you already know he is the one I trust, I would do the same for him. He is my friend, my good friend.

All my loving,
Osborne

PS: Emile, Benjamin, Lilly, Caroline, I love you four, remember that.

81st Annual Academy Awards!! (by Lorena)

On Sunday, February 22nd 2009, the Oscars (the 81st Annual Academy Awards) took place, in the Kodak Theatre, in Los Angeles. As every year, since the past 81 years, actors, directors, writers, producers, etc received a prize (which is a golden human shaped statue "Oscar") for acting/directing/producing/etc a film that was out in 2008 (the Oscars are given out in categories such as best music, visual effects, film editing, directing, etc).
I like to watch this show because I love to see those handsome actors walking through the red carpet, and actresses modeling cute dresses. I also like to remember all those people that died in 2008, maybe I don't know most of them, but the ones I do are going to stay in my heart and mind forever, for performing such good characters in movies; for example Heath Ledger!
Another thing I like about Oscars is that you can remind yourself of all those movies you saw, but also get and idea of the ones you haven't seen yet.
The only thing I hate in Oscars especially in this year's is that: according to who does the actors/directors etc receive the Oscar? I hate that a movie that I thought was good (like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)receives a few Oscars or not at all (e.g. Australia) and another one receives a lot (like Slumdog Millionaire (which I haven't seen yet and is probably great)) but maybe one of those Oscars that the film received, was deserved by another one.
I don't think it's quite fair that only one actor/actress between 5 others receive the Oscar, while all/most of them made a great performance and deserve a prize each.
To see more about the 81st Annual Academy Awards go to:
http://www.oscars.com/

Are the Oscars interesting or not?

The Oscars are presented anually to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, writers, usw. In the film industry the Oscars arent just a celebration, where the people should look perfect but they are where they job is being judge. The Oscars are something big, they nominate their job, but they also reward it.

Journey's End (by Lorena)

Journey's End is a play that was written by R. C. Sherriff in 1928, based in the problems and situations that people lived during World War I.
The setting is located in the trenches (excavations in the earth, where people used to hide from their enemies and sometimes build a room (dugout) where they slept underground)of St. Quentin, France (in 1918.)
The author somehow wrote this book to express his own experiences in this important war. He lets the reader know how difficult it was to live in those conditions, without even knowing if the following day you'd be alive.
Throughout the play,you can notice that not everything you expect is exactly how you wanted or thought it was; for example in Journey's End it talks about heroes and role models to people that when they get to know them better, get a totally different impression.
Characters:
* Colonel
* Captain Hardy
* Captain Stanhope
* Second Lieutenant Hibbert
* Second Lieutenant Trotter
* Second Lieutenant Raleigh
* Lieut. Osborne
* Sergeant Major
* Private Mason
* German Soldier

An Emo Diary by Dafnee

17/Abril/2002/
Today was a day, when you just dont know whats happening anymore. I dont see any sense of people making jokes and taking fun. I dont see like them, I dont feel like them. Can I just act like I dont care at all? All that prepotent people and all that stupid things thay talk about, is really unbearable. Then in my house, my father isnt never with us (well... my brother isnt here too, so actually my father isnt never with me.) And all that stupid lie about my mothers murder is incredible funny. Lol... I just cannot think that my father really believes that we believe that lie.
This hasnt have any sense at all.
Is boring.

My Emo Diary (by Lorena)

Monday 12th June 2008
Today, once more, I was called "gay" in all the places I visited: in school, in the metro, in the street, everywhere. I'm tired of it, just because I'm an emo it doesn't mean I am gay. Just because I like Ediana songs, which are romantic and remeber me of someone I used to love doesn't mean I am gay, I mean is it not right to feel that way? Just becuase I like to dress up this way and use makeup in my eyes, doesn't mean I am gay. I'm tired of it! Why can't people accept me just the way I am!

Tuesday 13th June 2008
First, I was ignored for my appearance and the way I thought, then I was excluded for being an emo and now, I'm insulted and critisised for being something I'm not, "gay".

Thursday 15th June 2008
Here in Lima (Peru), since being gay is something incorrect and terrible, I'm being even more excluded than I used to be before, but I'm not gay for christ sake! Why people can't understanmd this?!?! Why is everyone so ignorant that they believe all emos are "gays" and repeat it so everyone believes it?? Why? Why?

Emos (by Lorena)

Well, this is a complicated theme, but I don't really have anything against emos. I think that emotional people that take it very serious, somehow exagerate when they do those horrible things to themselves and the way they dress is weird. In the other hand, I think that these theme has really gone too far(it started being music and now, people are commiting suicide.) I think that everybody is free to do whatever he/she wishes with his/her life, so if they want to cut and kill themselves they're free to do it, though I think its something really sad and terrible to do. This is a really sad theme, also, because you can see what people that suffer so much can do, and how people reject them so much.

Emos! By Dafnee

Everyone has different ways of thinking and feeling. Everyone is different so, I don`t see the reason of being rude with emos or judge them. That one person has different ideas about life or any type of conversations don`t mean that is a bad thing. Emos are just fine!

Cecil O'Brien 2005 (by LOrena)

Day 1
This piece of cloth belongs to that thin piece of what they call 'a blanket' they give us to cover ourselves at night.
I can't even express myself correctly all I'm saying and all I can think about in this moment is betrayal. I mean I didn't do anything to get locked in this bloody place, I only gave my opinion about that damn president of us, or not even us since I don't consider a United States citizen anymore. I just keep repeating to myself: Aren't we free to say our opinions and express ourselves?

Day 11
My lawyer came to talk to me today. What seems to be my only chance for getting out here is starting to disappear. My roommate and I have been arguing about escaping. We both are afraid of what's coming next...

Day 13
There are about 20 more new souls in this prison, all brought today. One of them seems really familiar to me. The authority in this place makes me sick! I can't believe I used to believe in US political citizens.

Day 14
That's it , its gone, my oportunity for getting out of here in a legal way, is gone. I discovered who she was: the only person who was trying to help me, my lawyer has been imprisoned here, isolated from any inocent, guilty or unlucky soul and no one knows why. I'm worried about my family, they escaped to another country I won't mention just in case this cloth falls in wrong hands. I'm starting to consider my roommates idea of escaping, its incredibly difficult but I'm totally desperate and about to become insane.

Day 28
Today I saw how a prisoner tried to escape and was killed in his attempt. Amazingly this has grown my wishes of escaping even more: I don't care if I get killed in my attempt, I don't care about anything since my life has been ruined and there's no going back. I just want people to know the truth about politics in this country: THEY CONTROL YOU! SO BE CAREFUL AND DON'T TRUST ANYONE.

Day 34
I'll just pray for my family...

The Balloon's Fugue! (by Lorena)

Round and soft,
Floating by, there it goes
Like a road of rough white string
Tied it is
To the kid

Can’t escape unless
The cord is released
In this case feels like a loss
Of your life
The object which kept you alive,
Entertained

It’s gone
Freely floating by itself
Not worried about anything
Just the direction it’s going to take
The carefulness and aware for spikes and leaves,
For birds and too much wind
For cables and trees

Whilst you are contemplating it
With such a regret
For letting it go
To see what happened

She always told you don’t untie it
If you want to keep it
As your friend for long periods
Have fun moving with it
Pulling it
Up in the air

Now I know what happens
I first didn’t believe her
All those scolding make her seem
Like a liar

Now I know what happens
I just wanted to see by myself

Thank you mum for trying to prevent me
Now I feel so fool

Ofrenda to George Orwell

Last thursday we made an ofrenda about the author of Animal Farm, George Orwell. We participated in a competition along with other ofrendas from many forms and grades but unfortunately didn't win. We really wanted to win because we put a lot of effort in it as well as our tutor, Ian, and we had a good and original idea. We placed a big paper painted with a dark sky, and with a big tower in the middle, where a big advertising with a face saying "Big brother is watching you" was, that represented one of his books called 1984. We also put an helicopter climbing from the top. In front of the paper, we put a table with many flowers typical in Mexico in October and November, fruits, bread, sugar skulls and a cup with water; there were 4 chairs. In two of the chairs there were 2 guys with pig masks playing cards with a man sitting in a third chair who was the man in the advertising of Big Brother. The fourth chair was supposed to be for George Orwell, but never arrived since he's dead. The pigs represented his book Animal Farm. All the floor was covered with flowers and there were candles. In front of the whole ofrenda there were 4 guards that represented his book 1984 who were looking after Big Brother.
Even though we made a big effort and didn't win, all the other ofrendas were amazing, creative and really beautiful. We congratulate the winner forms!

El Canto del Loco (by Lorena)

I found a very cool video on youtube about the song "Ya nada volverá a ser como antes" from "El Canto del Loco" (group from Spain). Its obviously in spanish but I like it very much, not only because the song is fabulous, but also because in the video, the spanish football player that is now playing for Liverpool, Fernando Torres, appears ( I think he's really handsome and plays great.)
I really like this band so if you watch the video and like it I really recommend you to watch others and hear more songs since their amazing too!
Check it out:
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=TZejNI3D-os
Hope you like it as much as I do (though I think the ending is really sad!)

Ironic - Alanis Morissette (Dafnee Orezza)

Alanis Morissete is an artist who writes her songs and creates her music, she also has more good songs but I chose this one because it`s different and creative. This song is one of my favourites because I like very much the way she writes. She gives a message that life is really unknow, you cannot know what will happen to you. I also like the video, were she appears driving a car and then she sees through the mirror and realizes that a woman was behind herself, then another woman appears on the other side. If you know Alanis Morissette you can realize that all woman that suddendly appear are always her. My interpretation about this is that maybe she has a lot of personalities. You can see the video at this page:

13 Going on 30(2004) (Lorena)

Starring: Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer, Andy Serkis
Director: Gary Winick
Running Time: 97 mins.
Comedy, Fantasy, Romance
*****
The job of Gary Winick was to create once more a great movie of romance and comedy, which are his specialties. Being this his 7th movie as a director, he was able to direct a fabulous movie that will make anyone laugh, not only teenagers but also people from every age and have a good time. It’s also a story that will make older people remember their childhood.

Jennifer Garner plays Jenna Rink, the 13-year-old girl who wished her life was different; years pass and she meets again with his childhood’s best friend, Matt Flamhaff (Mark Ruffalo) and then realizes of something she should have done, years ago.

The typical 13-year-old girl, who reads beauty magazines, who wishes to be cool, to date the most handsome guy at school, to be the queen at the spring prom and wants to be older, as a birthday present receives a wishing dust which is the responsible for making her life change. One day she wakes up being a 30-year-old woman with a quite respectable job and a famous & cute boyfriend, after some time, realizes her adolescence wasn’t as bad as she thought.

Having wonderful settings at New York City and New Jersey, incredible costumes, a lovely story theme and fantastic lyrics such as “Love is a battlefield” and “Thriller” between a huge variety, this movie is one of my favorites; in fact, it’s a movie that can be seen again and again and you don’t get tired of it. Of course not everybody will agree but people who like to laugh of little silly things, who love fashion and get inspired by love stories, will.

Movie from Dafnee

Love Actually (2003)

Cast: Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Heike Makatsch and Keira Knightley.
Director: Richard Curtis
Category: Comedy
Running Time: 135 min.
*****
On DVD

Love Actually is a film about love. There are many little stories with different problems related with life. Every story has its own plot and controversy. The beginnings and the ends of these stories are joined together in an airport. Every person found the love in an unexpected place and made one whole story. This film isn't for children, however it is an interesting idea from the director: Richard Curtis, to try to give the message that Love is everywhere, it doesn't matter where the love is: from parents to children's, between sisters, boyfriends or girlfriends, etc. The love is all around the world. Plus the variety of actors is very interesting, everyone has a different way to transmit the feeling, they are famous and act very good.

I surely recommend this film. Is a very good experience.
