The Destructors by Graham Greene (Dafff)

In this book Graham Greene tells us the story about a group of boys that call themselves as “the Wormsley Common Gang”. They are just some bad street boys that actually enjoy seeing other people suffer or other crazy things like that. They accept a new integrant because they saw a dangerous quality in Trevor, who has only fifteen years old. They refer to him as “T”.

During the war, “the Wormsley Common Gang” liked to meet each others at a site where they can hear the bomb fall sound. Unexpectedly T tells to Blackie, who the leader of the band is, that it would be very funny to make explode the neighbors house. Then Trevor says that he just visited Old Misery’s house, the neighbor, so he now know how the interior of his house looked like and they can enter and maybe steel things. But in between telling the plan he had, suddenly he thinks that it would be so much better if they destroy the house from the inside out, and so nobody can see them. The plan was going quite good. Destruct the house would give glory to the Wormsley Common Gang. They were done with the house. They totally destruct it.

When Old Misery notices that is house is gone, but then he get angry and he asks the driver what happened to it. The driver starts to laugh all over and then he apologizes but Old Misery has to admit it´s funny.

I think that if you really analyze this story you can find so many morals. Like, for example… we can notice how different humor can be depending on the neighborhoods; where you grow up has so much to do with the person you become, but in my opinion is kind of horrifying how people in general don´t realize that he’s actions can actually affect others live. The influence is one thing we humans don’t have very clear and this book is just one more example of it. Like for the gang band, they take destructing Old Misery´s house like a price to win. They think that that fact is going to make the band more famously and is going to be brilliant to his reputation, but for Old Misery they are taking away all he had. They are taking away somebody´s home just because they think it´s hilarious. This is on definitive not one of my favorite books, because I don´t really see any point of this type of humor. For myself I say it is pointless.

Personally, I think that is stupid laughing or making fun with other alien persons suffer. For my part I like more elaborated jokes, but I neither recommend not reading it, because you can learn at least one thing of every book. And actually, it is good once in a while to read unusual stories and of course you don´t find many stories like this. So, my recommendation would be that it won´t affect if you read it, but when you read it try to be in a mood very simple and try to find a point of it.

The Destructors (Lorena)

Written by Graham Greene in 1954, 'The Destructors', is a short story that occurs in the streets of London after WW2.

A gang of kids called the "Wormsley Common Gang", after being convinced by a member of the same, plan to destroy an old man's house - which is the only one left from all the remains of the war in a parking lot- leaving absolutely no trace of it.

Trevor (T.) is the gang member who gets the idea of destroying the old man's house. He is not a normal person and you can perceive this by the way he acts and thinks, but this is an obvious way to behave, after surviving a war.
The old man, Mr. Thomas (or as the gang call him, "Old Misery") is a just a good man, who treats everyone politely and doesn't harm anybody, but despite his kind acts, he is about to experience something h doesn't deserve.

Its supposed to be a fun story, involving 'black humour', but personally I don't find it funny because what they want to do, is something inhuman and terrible, besides I wouldn't like that it occurred to me. It's an interesting story though, where you can experience different feelings such as suspense. You can also perceive the ways of how people behaved/thought after harsh situations, like surviving a war in this case.

Funny Quote (Lorena)

I think this video is really funny because you can see how people can be convinced to do something just by following what others do, even if they don't know what is really happening. You can see how a group of organized people manage to scare innocent ignorant people in the street, by making them believe something bad is going to happen.

Journey's End Letter Home, by Lorena

12th June 1918

My beloved Emile,
I write to inform you that this could be the last letter you receive from me.
In a few hours I’m about to go there into No Man’s Land to fight against those bloody dam Germans good for nothing. I was picked to do it, to start the raid, along with the newest integrant of the team. He’s name is Raleigh. He is a good innocent and intelligent guy, I really like him but I’m not sure if he should go with me; orders are orders and I can’t disobey, but the problem is his inexperience, he’s not prepared enough for doing this, but there needs to be a reason for why he was picked.

I don’t really know how to feel: I feel really scared I don’t want to die. Not this way. Not shoot by the enemy. I really prefer to die from some kind of illness, even if its painful and unbearable, I still prefer it; but I’m quite sure everything is going to go out well. I’m hopeful that I will survive this raid. Since the day I have been informed that I am in charge of starting it, that was about two days ago, along with the new kid, Raleigh, I’ve been praying. In case anything goes wrong in a few hours, I want you to resist; I know its difficult being so many years together sharing our love, sharing a family, but someday, somehow it would have come. I don’t want to admit it, but everybody’s life ends at some point. How I wish it was different. Look after yourself, Benjamin, Lilly and Caroline, our lovely and beautiful kids.

I want to go back home with you and the kids. Even though I wish this, I can’t disappoint my battalion, especially Stanhope. I’m in doubt with him. He is such a good friend; I really appreciate the moments we’ve spent together in this hell. At least I’m not alone, not by having him by my side. We support each other. War is pointless but I don’t want to give up now, especially not when my entire troop that has given everything. We all have given everything and made our best, we’ve put so much effort in this warfare, but it’s not worth it; not war being the reason.

I wish I could have you in my arms again. See Lilly and Caroline practice ballet and see Benjamin play Fur Elise in the piano. Has he learned any other yet? How I wish to see him, and the girls. I want to read them all Alice in Wonderland. I want to see them grow up healthy and happy; my desire is that we were all together, sitting in the dining room, eating the delicious meal you prepare for us every Sunday evening and see my family. Let me tell you I have been thinking of you all the time, about the love we have, give and get. You are the best thing that could ever happen to me, really, you are my life, I don’t know what I would be if we haven’t met in that cafeteria Emile, just imagine. Our lives would be so different. Who’s life wouldn’t be different if he or she had taken another decision? Go that way or the other? Teach history or remain unemployed? Break up with him/her or marry? Kill Archduke Franz Ferdinand or not? Just imagine how different it would be if that person who decided to kill him thought the opposite, think it twice, regret at the correct minute and avoid the consequences. War. How different, just imagine... but what happened, happened and we can’t go back in time; how I wish we could, but that is the rule.

Emile, do you remember that gold ring we got the day of our wedding? That is a nonsense question, how could you not remember it? I am going to remove it, for the first time, and leave it in the table. I’m putting Stanhope in charge of it in case I die, so you can receive it safely; as you already know he is the one I trust, I would do the same for him. He is my friend, my good friend.

All my loving,
Osborne

PS: Emile, Benjamin, Lilly, Caroline, I love you four, remember that.

81st Annual Academy Awards!! (by Lorena)

On Sunday, February 22nd 2009, the Oscars (the 81st Annual Academy Awards) took place, in the Kodak Theatre, in Los Angeles. As every year, since the past 81 years, actors, directors, writers, producers, etc received a prize (which is a golden human shaped statue "Oscar") for acting/directing/producing/etc a film that was out in 2008 (the Oscars are given out in categories such as best music, visual effects, film editing, directing, etc).
I like to watch this show because I love to see those handsome actors walking through the red carpet, and actresses modeling cute dresses. I also like to remember all those people that died in 2008, maybe I don't know most of them, but the ones I do are going to stay in my heart and mind forever, for performing such good characters in movies; for example Heath Ledger!
Another thing I like about Oscars is that you can remind yourself of all those movies you saw, but also get and idea of the ones you haven't seen yet.
The only thing I hate in Oscars especially in this year's is that: according to who does the actors/directors etc receive the Oscar? I hate that a movie that I thought was good (like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)receives a few Oscars or not at all (e.g. Australia) and another one receives a lot (like Slumdog Millionaire (which I haven't seen yet and is probably great)) but maybe one of those Oscars that the film received, was deserved by another one.
I don't think it's quite fair that only one actor/actress between 5 others receive the Oscar, while all/most of them made a great performance and deserve a prize each.

Are the Oscars interesting or not?

The Oscars are presented anually to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, writers, usw. In the film industry the Oscars arent just a celebration, where the people should look perfect but they are where they job is being judge. The Oscars are something big, they nominate their job, but they also reward it.
